were envisioned and created in Ubud, Bali between the years 1992 -1999.

I present these in chronological order

from my first studies in mask making to the finding my path into

Contemporary Totemic Expression.

The next five masks are renditions of Alaskan Eskimo Masks,, these Masks were created and carved as my first lesson in mask making when I arrived in Bali 1989, inspired from the Eskimo collection profiled in " Primitivism in 20th Century Art".

Biography

David Trevelyan was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on November 13, 1955. His formative years were spent surrounded by the powerful landscapes of the Canadian wilderness, where family interests in sports, arts and nature both inspired and influenced his work as an artist. David’s parents encouraged a fun loving environment and held a strong belief in nurturing the creative spirit in their children. From an early age David developed a fascination with local Native Indian arts, particularly masks, which he began to carve from wood.

David attended Art School in Calgary, Alberta, during which time his interests in indigenous native arts and eastern philosophy awakened. Spending as much time as possible snow skiing and hiking in The Rocky Mountains his relationship and appreciation of nature deepened. David then moved to British Columbia and developed his love of music playing guitar and mandolin, touring western Canada with an acoustic band. After backpacking across Europe he went on to form a design company, where he was Art Director for ten years.

Following this era David made a transition from advertising art and traveled to South East Asia, where he began to explore a fusion of cultural expressions through drawing and designing. Although unaware of it at the time, this period marked the foundation for the sculpture that he would later produce from his studio, which he set up in Bali Indonesia in 1990.

During his time in South East Asia David has been researching the variations of Asian motif, as an extension of his passion for Primitive Art. His work has led him on a voyage of personal discovery, in which he has experimented with musical, avian and oceanic metaphors, as well as the power of tribal design and created stand alone sculpture. His first show was held in Bali in 1991 and featured sculpture created from mixed media, wood, iron, hair, feathers, shell, stone, and anything else he could get his hands on.

Somewhere around 1994 thru 2000 David reached out and experimented with digital explorations / digital photography,, rendering and manipulating images with computers… Along with these on going experiments with unlikely combinations of other materials such as cement and fiberglass David explored the roll of the Artist and contemporary technologies with multi medias and cyber explorations.

From 1998 to 2007 David pioneered and developed the Media department for the John Hardy Jewelry Co. in Bali. In 2004 created the Multi Media and Video Department, then in 2006, created a personal photo Data Base for John Hardy fashion company.

David is continuing to evolve and explore as an artist, entering new creative territories and expressions… In early 2000 David ventured into the arena of Painting… The themes for his paintings are still entrenched with a foundation of tribal design rudiments… Now focusing on the pure design, energy and forms of ethnic design using contemporary <POP> expressions, he continues to explore, innovate and build original creations from this seemingly unlimited reservoir.

As if this was not enough… David has recently become a published author,,, and has co-written the book,, "the Monster that ate Ubud"..

David has set up a new Sculpture Studio in Ubud Bali and is back in the Creative sand box producing creations in a variety of medias and new materials.
